Today's top story is Bon Secours supports healthy communities at the grass roots level. Now there is no pun intended here but this year congress will renew the Farm Bill. The Farm Bill is legislation that governs farm and food policies. These policies directly impact what Americans eat and strongly influence the nation's overall health and wellness. Under the current farm bill about 95% of its $41.6 billion dollars goes to growers of corn and soy. And as you know, corn and soy are used primarily here for corn syrup fillers and animal feed. Only 5% goes to growers of fresh produce. Now stay with me here. High sugar, high fat, processed foods are significant contributors to obesity, diabetes and heart disease. So why spend so much money on crops used to produce foods that are not healthy for you? Instead, shouldn't we be supporting healthy communities by supporting a change to the farm bill to push more dollars over to fresh produce growers? Well, of course we should. If more money goes to fresh produce growers, fresh produce will become more affordable and accessible. Bon Secours is already supporting healthy communities with community gardens and farmers markets. Now it is time to step up and advocate for a change in the 2012 Farm Bill that will help reduce the cost of fresh produce and make it more accessible to our communities.
